Some info about The Catcher in the Rye

In 5th level, the 2nd term reading book is The Catcher in the Rye by JD. Salinger.

The story, set in the 50's, is about a teenage boy who is expelled from his school (again), and who spends a couple of days in New York instead of going straight home to face his parents' anger.

The book deals with the feelings of alienation, confusion and rebellion common in teenagers, but judging from the book's immense popularity, not exclusive to them, and is narrated in the 1st person in what is known as the "stream of consciousness" style.

Despite its cult following the novel has also received a great deal of criticism, not only for its supposedly anti-traditional values, but also because the main character, Holden, is perceived by some as a whining, self-absorbed brat.

But whether they find the character likeable or not, most people will get something out of this book, whether the portrait of the teenager itself, or the criticism of society, as at times it is not exactly clear who the "madman" in the story is.

Especially recommended for people who empathise with weirdos and misfits.
